Electric COOLING FANS (Dual) #3 -- CO-111B

"Just installed two puller electric cooling fans in my '58.
I chose these fans after quite a bit of searching for:
- A puller fan, since they don't block the radiator.
- A fan size that allows me to install two side-by-side.
- The fans has to have as thin of an edge as possible so when two are installed the low ends of them will face the water pump pulley, which is the tightest area - A good brand name/quality (many offshore ones are out there but with questionable reliability).
- Pulls enough air for adequate cooling.
I settled on a pair of 9" Spal fans (made in Italy) which seem to fit the bill. Each fan is ~ 625 CFM with 10 curved blades.

Quick test fit revealed the fans have to be right against the radiator fins and the rad has to move about 8mm (~ 3/8" ) forward, both are doable.
I did not want to use the common "speed zip ties" to fasten the fans through the radiator core. I wanted something more sturdy, besides I read on other forums that some of the speed ties wore through the brass core tubes and caused a leak.

I fabricated up this simple frame made from a 3 ft. piece of 1" square tubing that I cut up to get the right angles, then welded it up.

The 3/8" nuts welded to the frame are used as spacers to shift the radiator/fan assembly forward a bit. The standard 5/16" radiator bolts will pass through the 3/8" nuts easily. I welded eight 1/4" bolts (after cutting the heads) to mount the fans on. And a side view to show how it is recessed to sit against the radiator fins.

Fans assembled to the frame, and the radiator/fan assembly together. Note the thermo switch that I added to the radiator. I also added some closed-cell foam around the fans edge to act as a shroud so air can only go through the radiator and not around the fan. The fans are driven by a relay in my relay box, but that will be another discussion coming soon. -- Ahmed

"What did you have in mind for the temperature controller? I tried a little inexpensive Chinese digital controller from Ebay, shows set point and actual temperature, comes with a very short thermocouple wire, so unless you extend it the display control will be in the engine bay. I understand however, for a short run, you could use a copper wire to extend the thermocouple.
I have mounted the controller display unit in a small plastic gadget box still under the hood. It appears to work very well, but time will tell". -- Paul

"I chose the method that MG did in their later MGB models, just installed a thermo switch in approximately the same place as they did. I had to drill the radiator and solder the switch bung in it. Fairly straight forward job. I bought a couple of thermo switches with two different temperature range to see which one would work best. Ideally, the thermo switch should come on approx 10 degrees above the thermostat rating, so as not to fight each other.
The thermo switch is widely available on Ebay and Amazon. It comes with the bung. Here's an example": https://www.ebay.com/itm/254364151576
