Intake Manifold, Heat Shield and Number Plate Assembly - CB-126

Since this question pops up a lot, it was time to post the pictures. The intake manifold was originally painted red, as well as the carburetor heat shield. Apparently the factory painted these parts in assembly with the engine as a whole, so the back of the heat shield may have received overspray paint, and the intake manifold may have been painted on the upper visible surfaces only. For restoration work we tend to mask off the insulation and paint both sides of the heat shield, and all of the intake manifold (because concours preparation is always better than the original factory result).

The bracket for throttle and choke cables was painted black, as it was to be installed later. Two "P" clips holding the heater water return pipe go on next (if the car has a heater). The brass tag for Firing Order and Valve Clearance is placed on top of the "P" clips if present, otherwise directly on top of the throttle bracket. The plate sits at a bit of an angle due to a step in the bracket weldment. This assembly is finished with flat washers, lock washers, and thin jam nuts.

When installing the carburetors, install a paper gasket, then the thermal insulator block followed by another paper gasket before the carburetor. There is a bracket for throttle return spring that goes on the bottom stud of the rear carburetor before lock washers and hex nuts.

Addendum June 6, 2023:
There is a bit of contention in one statement above. I am of the opinion that the intake manifold and heat shield were painted separately and installed later along with the exhaust manifold and carburetors. If the intake manifold and heat shield were painted in assembly with the engine, then it would be difficult to paint the left side of the engine, and the parts would have to be removed later to install the unpainted exhaust manifold. Intake manifold was likely painted rear face down with the front faces and ports masked, painted red all the way around. Heat shield was likely painted back side down, only sprayed red on the front side.
