If I remove the 4 screws holding the hinge to the frame will whatever they're screwed into move or is it fastened to frame in some way? If it's not fastened can I get to it if I remove the side panels"?
There is a floating tapping plate captured within the body post. It fits in a slot that is closed on three sides so it cannot fall inside the post. It is accessible from inside the cockpit after removing the forward kick panel. You can remove all four screws to insert a shim, then reinstall the screws without losing the tapping plate. The tapping plate floats in the slot for adjustment for door alignment. The plates if missing can be made out of 1/4” steel plate. Cut the rectangle, drill and tap four holes for 1/4-28-UNF threads.
The doors have clearance holes for the hinge screws, and the screws are fixed with flat washers, lock washers and hex nuts inside the door. This is not a problem with the roadster with empty doors, but the Coupe has the vent window with window guide, side glass, and the window lift mechanism inside the door. If you unscrew the hinge on the door face you may lose the small fasteners inside, or at least you have a tough time getting a wrench or nut driver inside to hold the nuts while tightening the screws.
Door fixing for a Coupe is a lot easier if you make (or buy) tapping plates just like the ones in the A post, and put those inside the door instead of the washers and nuts.
