For the MGA pushrod engines, camshaft turns clockwise, and the oil pump drive gear is pushed downward against the alloy oil pump housing where thrust is taken by the spindle flange against the oil pump, no thrust washer required.
For the MGA Twin Cam engines, the half-speed shaft turns anti-clockwise, and the oil pump drive gear is pushed upward against the iron engine block. This application needs the thrust washer above the spindle gear face.
Notice that the helical gears on the Twin Cam half-speed shaft and oil pump drive gear and tachometer drive gear all have the helix angle of the teeth in opposie direction from the pushrod engines. This is because the Twin Cam half-speed shaft is gear driven and turns in oppposite direction, but the oil pump and tachometer drive need to turn in same direction as the pushrod engines.
See tech article TC-303E for drawing errors in the SPL. For sure this thrust washer must be installed above the spindle drive gear, not below it.
