The MGA With An Attitude
MOWOG Trade Mark - HS-114
First a few words of History, beginning with William Richard Morris, 1st Viscount Nuffield, commonly known as "Lord Nuffield" (10 October 1877 – 22 August 1963). Founder of Morris Motors Limited (1912). He started another company "Morris Garage" to serve as agent to sell and service Morris cars, what we today commonly refer to as a car dealer. When a second agent location was opened (and more later) the company name changed to "Morris Garages". His sales manager beginning 1921, Cecil Kimber, was developing and promoting modified sporty versions of the Morris cars. The MG logo first appeared on some sales literature in 1923, so for a short time "MG" apparently meant "Morris Garages". The MG octagon logo first appeared on a 1924 Morris 14/28. It also appeared on "Old Number One", a rebodied Morris 14/28 built for the lands End Rally in 1925. In 1928 M.G. Car Company, Ltd was spun off from Morris Garages as an independent company, and the "MG" octagon logo became the trademark of M.G. Car Co. Ltd. So from 1928 on, "MG" (or "M.G.") and the MG octagon would mean "M.G.Car Co. Ltd" (not Morris Garages which was a separate company).
In 1927 Morris purchased the assets of the collapsed "The Wolseley Tool and Motor Car Company" (founded 1901, renamed "Wolseley Motors Limited" in 1914), reincorporating and renaming it "Wolseley Motors (1927) Limited" (later dropping the "1927" to become "Wolseley Motors Limited". Wolseley was transferred to Morris Motors Limited in 1935, joining Morris, MG and later Riley/Autovia in what was later promoted as the Nuffield Organization. This convergence would spawn the trademark logo "MOWOG" in 1935. Engine number prefixes were M=Morris, W=Wolseley, and G=MG. Lots of bickering with other opinions, but we will presume that MOWOG means "Morris Wolseley MG" (definitely NOT "Morris Wolseley Group", as there never was such an organization).

On a side note (and another front), Austin Motor Company Ltd was founded in 1905 by Herbert Austin. In 1952 this was merged into Morris Motors Ltd forming a new holding company British Motor Corporation (BMC) Limited, but keeping its separate identity. The trademark(s) MG/Austin were then commonly displayed together.
