If I back up to previous thread hole for split pin it's okay, but surely that's not right. Can't really think what's tightening up as the distance spacer should lock bearings together".

Okay, the MGA spacer should be nominally 2.000 inches long. The MGB spacer is much shorter, about 1-9/16" long. Some recent MGA spacers from Moss Motors are too short at 1.980" long. Some other parts suppliers may have the same problem, so do check length of thee parts if you recently bought new ones.

"I've measured the distance between the hub shoulders and the distance tube, and the tube is .020" shorter at 1.98". Once assembled the distance tube is able to move because of the difference in length between spacer and shoulders. It was a new MGA part from Moss. It hasn't been modified".

Send it back with a bitch note, faulty part. It needs to be 2.000" long. If you feel the need to use it, then add 0.020" of shims as are used in Twin Cam or MGB front hubs. But do let the supplier know they are selling a bad part.

Then Toby got a response from Moss (Europe) R&D:
"We have measured these and you are correct, they are short by 0.020 they should be 2.000 ± 0.005 but it is 1.980. We will be talking to the manufacturers to get them the correct length".

Nice quick response and acknowledgement of the problem. They also offered to send Front wheel bearing inner race spacer some shims to fix it to get the car back in service ASAP, and new outer wheel bearings as well, all no charge. How's that for customer service? But be aware that the MGB bearing shims are smaller ID and will need to be opened up a bit with a small grinding wheel to fit on the MGA stub axle.

Now we wait for the follow-up. I don't expect Moss to issue a recall and track down all incorrect parts that have already been shipped (even though they could if they were so inclined). So keep an eye out for any faulty parts that have already been shipped, may be in your hands or in your car, and may be sitting on the parts distributors shelves for some time to come. Also check near future shipments to see if new parts will be the correct length, or if the vendor might send some shims along with the too-short parts to make them serviceable (hint, hint). I will post more here if/when I may get more information about the ongoing status of these parts.
